The word Love

 

The phrase “I love you”

 

Could this be the most overused word or phrase today?

 

Have you uttered this word or phrase?

 

Do you mean it when you say it?

 

What does love or I love you mean to you?

So as I begin to think about the word love and its meaning I found thirty-six definitions to the word love. Any of those thirty-six could be what you believe love truly is. Martin Luther King Jr. describes love this way. “Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.” “I have decided to stick to love…Hate is too great a burden to bear.” – Martin Luther King Jr.

 

So let’s go deeper, Jesus says and commands that we love one another as he loved us. John 15:12. Some ask the question how did Jesus love? I tell you his version of love was not just said, it wasn’t just put in a phrase. His love simply was shown, it was shown when he spoke, shown when taught, shown when he faced challenges, shown when he was beat and mocked, shown when he was on cross. The best definition to the word love I can give is provided by the life of Jesus himself. Not just said but shown in his actions recorded for the world to see and hear. We should understand that this is our blueprint.

 

Finally I leave you with this, if we love like Jesus did, we have no time for hate. If we love like Jesus did, we are motivated to pray for others. If we love like Jesus did, the world would be a better place. While we say the word love or phrase I love you let’s understand that love cannot just be said it has to be shown in action. The definition of action is the process of doing something. Martin Luther King Jr. showed it in his actions and so did our Savior, Jesus Christ.
